Ohio’s Smallmouth Bass Fishery

Ohio is home to a world-class smallmouth bass fishery that most anglers outside the region don’t fully appreciate. Lake Erie’s eastern basin routinely produces 5- and 6-pound smallmouth, while inland rivers like the Scioto and Little Miami offer classic wade-fishing for aggressive bronzebacks. Whether you fish from a bass boat, kayak, or standing in the current, Ohio has smallmouth water worth traveling for.

Lake Erie

Lake Erie is the crown jewel. The rocky reefs and clear water of the central and eastern basins produce some of the largest smallmouth in the Great Lakes. Fish in the 4- to 6-pound class are caught regularly, and the Ohio state record smallmouth came from Lake Erie. Key areas include the reefs off Cleveland, Fairport Harbor, Ashtabula, and Conneaut. Tube jigs, drop shot rigs, and ned rigs worked along rocky structure in 10 to 30 feet of water are the top presentations. The best fishing runs from late May through October.

Alum Creek Reservoir

Alum Creek Reservoir in Delaware County is central Ohio’s best smallmouth lake. The 3,387-acre reservoir has clear water, rocky points, and steep bluffs that create ideal smallmouth habitat. Fish the main-lake points and riprap in spring, then transition to deeper rock piles and ledges in summer. Crankbaits and jerkbaits are effective in spring; soft plastics and drop shot rigs dominate in summer.

Clear Fork Reservoir

This Richland County reservoir offers clear water and rocky structure that smallmouth love. Clear Fork Reservoir is smaller and less pressured than many Ohio lakes, which means bigger average fish. Work the dam face, rocky shorelines, and submerged points with tube jigs and small swimbaits.

Scioto River

The Scioto River from Columbus south through Chillicothe is excellent wade-fishing water for smallmouth. Rocky riffles, deep pools, and undercut banks hold fish throughout the river. Inline spinners, small crankbaits, and soft plastic swimbaits are productive. The river is accessible from numerous public access points, and float trips by canoe or kayak are a great way to cover water.

Little Miami River

A designated National Scenic River, the Little Miami in southwest Ohio offers outstanding smallmouth fishing in a beautiful setting. The river runs clear over gravel and limestone, and smallmouth are abundant from Clifton Gorge downstream through Loveland. Wade fishing with topwater lures on summer mornings is hard to beat.

Grand River

The Grand River in northeast Ohio is better known for steelhead, but its lower reaches hold excellent smallmouth populations from June through September. Once steelhead season winds down, the river transitions into quality smallmouth water with deep pools and rocky runs that hold fish in the 2- to 4-pound range.

Tube jigs (1/4 oz on a jig head, dragged along the bottom) are the all-around top smallmouth bait in Ohio — effective on lakes and rivers alike.

Drop shot rigs with small soft plastics excel in clear water and on Lake Erie’s deep structure.

Topwater lures — buzzbaits, poppers, and walking baits — produce explosive strikes on rivers during low-light periods in summer.
